Lot description

Oil on board.
Signed and monogrammed.
According to a description of the time, it "depicts the interest of a mistress as she observes the impressions of a lover reading a letter she has been the bearer of". This is one of two versions of the original work, which he presented at the Paris Salon of 1870 and which were only known from a photograph that Moreno himself took at the time, having remained unknown since then: one of them ended up in Boston, perhaps through the London dealer Martin Colnaghi, Guardi and Continental Gallery, who had bought one of the replicas from him. The interior is the same as that of another of the artist's masterpieces, "Una oveja entre lobos" (1868-1882, private collection), i.e. the Archive in the Upper Chapter House of Toledo Town Hall, a painting he also presented at the Paris exhibition. From then on it became one of his most important works and was shown at other exhibitions, such as the Exhibition at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (9 December 1880).
